The Cat Head Pub โ Update, 1 September 2025
On 22 August 2025, over 60 Chiselborough residents gathered at the Village Hall to discuss the future of The Cat Head Public House. Chaired by parish councillors Kevin Mountain and Adrian Pipe, the meeting explored acquiring the pub as a community hub under a Community Benefits Society (CBS) model. This presentation was given.
Key points:
Strong Community Support: A survey showed 77% of 103 respondents rated the pubโs importance 5/5, with demand for weekly visits, catering (Sunday lunches, evening meals), quiz nights, and live music.
Asset of Community Value (ACV): The pub is now registered as an ACV, which requires the local authority to advise the community when the owner contacts them as required to tell them they intend to place the pub for sale on the market, for a period of 5 years. The community can then enact the community right to bid within 6 weeks, giving the community a period of six months to raise the funds required to purchase the pub.
Next Steps: A Red Book valuation is complete, with results due by early September. A steering committee (8โ12 members) will be formed to lead the CBS, independent of the parish council. Pledging is underway to gauge financial support.
Community Vision: The pub would seek to serve all ages and be a community hub. Grants and Plunkett Foundation support will aid the project.
The community voted strongly in favour of forming a steering committee (58 for, 1 against, 3 abstentions) and pledging support (48 in favour). Monthly meetings will keep the momentum going.
